Ladies’ Home Journal

Janie kept page 11 of the Ladies Home Journal of April 1916. It was an editorial by Gerald Mygatt, who was, I believe, a writer and journalist (1887-1955), whose novel Nightmare serialized in the Ottawa Citizen in 1928, and whose “non-sectarian collection of the finest prayers of the Protestant, Catholic and Jewish faiths” was published in 1944 for American service men and women, under the title Soldiers’ and Sailors’ Prayer Book.

It wasn’t the decoration by Joseph C. Coll that made her keep it. It was the noble sentiments: she was surely thinking of Percy as “one who is nobler and finer and dearer to you than anyone else,” and of children to whom they might give “the best that lies within your self and the self of that one whom you have chosen from all mankind.”
