That was another item on the reverse of the editorial Janie saved. The question, of course, that the writer does not ask is “how do we determine what is the right thing?” It is a question for soldiers as well as for civilians, as we have seen in the drill manual. Obedience is the right thing for soldiers, until it isn’t. (“I was just following orders” is not an excuse for war crimes.) And determining what is the right thing in the heat of battle, that is, using the initiative and independence that skirmishing drill was supposed to develop — let me just say that I am glad I have never been called No Man’s Land.
