The rather casual appearance of the 55th’s practice bivouac does not reveal how carefully such a temporary encampment was laid out. The Field Service Pocket Book, that invaluable ready reference for officers, provided diagrams and instructions for their set up.(1)
The horses are tied on each side of the ropes that literally constitute the horse lines, with five feet between horses.
