If the picture post card was sentimental, Percy’s own words were sincere and, to modern ears, far more moving.

Apparently, he stamped the card before thinking better of sending it through the post with his message for all to see. I hope he forgives me for publishing it now.

Transcription:

To my wife
As true as the star is to the mariners [sic]  compass So I will be to you always. Y[our] H[usband]
I will come home to love & to you when the peace tide flows again trusting in God to protect us all. [Six kisses.]

Remember that they were not husband and wife except in their own minds and hearts.
