Winter mud

November 19, 1916

“This afternoon I went on my first ride. A bunch of us went on a tear across country. The ground was in fierce shape and our horses were often up to the knees in mud. We were covered from head to feet in mud. One of the boys came off and dropped right in the muddy mater of a creek. He was soaked. Another boy had a bad spill. We had an awful job cleaning off our horses.” (1)

Meanwhile, in France, others were having an awful job cleaning their beasts. This mule is being cleaned off near Bernafay Wood in the area of Montaubon, at some point during the months’ long Battle of the Somme, 1916 (2)
