Witley, March 15, 1917

Thursday    We expected to come out of quarantine on the 23rd inst but unfortunately another took sick today so we shall get out now on the 13th of A[pril]

No date is yet known for the departure of the 81st Battery, but being under quarantine till mid April rules out Percy’s section from going with them.

William Calder in the Ammunition Column has readied his  mule team for today: “There is a prize for the best six mule team  – one team from each section or battery. Well I am picked as the lead driver for it & have to look after a fancy team of good looking mules for it (not my own they are a bad color) & get them shining.” (1) If he did as good a job on the mules as he did on the horse he is riding in this picture, they would look very smart indeed.
