Friday          The weather great today did not do much – figured out how to fix electric lights up on the gun for the sights at night, if we do it t’will be a great improvement am feeling great — no mail as yet this week

Percy’s idea that electric lights could be rigged on the eighteen-pounder underlines how static warfare had become on the Western Front. Look closely at this picture from Percy’s large album (labelled “Outside a gun emplacement, Witley Camp April ’17”): that pile of sandbags and earth is a substantial construction, meant to last some time.
