Witley, May 31, 1917

Thursday        The weather continues good.  The work was of the ordinary routine nothing much doing Rc’d letter from J[anie] the 1st since the 19th there must be some lost somewhere. Played checkers & cards tonight — in the Pink

The photo from Percy’s small album is titled “Just a quiet game, Witley.” It is obviously a passtime during some bivouac, rather than a quiet evening in the hut or the YMCA.

46 Just a quiet game Witley.jpgHeadquarters’ summary echoes Percy’s: “Routine parades [yesterday]. Ditto. Ditto [today].” (1) But it is the end of the month and so a summary is added:

“Quarantine has sunk to 30 N.C.Os & men only in the Divl. Arty. All units of the D.A. have spent a good number of days in marches & camps on the different training areas. Officers have acted in liason [sic] with the Infantry in schemes. The weather was fine & warm throughout.” (2)
