Thursday        Weather good. I rec’d a wire from Bert [Theobald] at noon he is home on 7 days leave from France I was paraded and tried for a special pass to go home &  failed going to try again on Sat morning. Gun laying this afternoon Was complimented on the cleanness of the steel work

He doesn’t sound too disappointed at not being able to go to Faversham to see his family and his youngest brother. There will be another chance during Bert‘s leave from the Royal Naval Air Service.

Perhaps the compliment on the state of his steel work eased the sting of refusal.
