Monday         Has been very hot to day consequently didn’t do much work Started on a bivouac just after supper 6:30 went out to larger Frensham [pond] arrived about 10 [pm.] after fixing things up went in for a swim about 11 [pm] water was great

According to the War Diary of the Fifth Division, today’s syllabus of training for the 55th Battery required the following:

which  hardly qualifies to my mind as “didn’t do much work.” And the day wasn’t over with evening stables: off they went on bivouac.79 Horse Lines Frensham Pond crop.jpg

There’s certainly no shade for man or beast in this photograph of “Horse Lines, Frensham,” from Percy’s small album. At least the men got to swim.
