The War Diary says that the schemes to develop independence and sense of responsibility in section commanders have been going on for several days. In these schemes, sections, “complete in every respect, carry out a thorough training in their own lines under the supervision of Battery & Brigade [commanders].” The schemes have been “taken up keenly by all ranks.” (1)

It’s hard to be keen about greasing guns. Nor does Percy consider worthy of note the “lectures to all ranks on the contents of training pamphlets & notes issued from Headquarters, [which] are included in the programmes of work.” (1) Maybe all that information was one of the things he was happy to forget in sleep.
